SEO Two Columns Fixed CSS/Table/Div Page Layout

Two columns page layouts look very simple, but they can be very effective too. This is example of so called "fixed" page layout. Fixed page layout means that this layout have same look on every screen resolution. Fixed page layout defines size of elements in pixels. Because fixed layout never change, it is usually easier to implement it compared to fluid (liquid) layout and especially when compared to elastic page layout.

There are many of factors that affect how high page is ranked on search engines. Most of them, like file name, incoming links, using of H1 tag etc. are not related to page layout. But, one of the search engine optimization (SEO) factors is position of main content in page HTML. It is better if main content is on the beginning of the HTML code. To get better ranking, this layout display main content in the middle (user friendly), but in HTML code Content area is placed before Navigation area (search engines friendly).

To get smaller page size, appearance of every element is controlled by CSS. Smaller page size also means faster page loads (this is SEO factor too) and reduced bandwidth. Because complete site appearance could be controlled by single external .css file, maintenance is easier and takes less time.

Some web designers find fixed page layout too limited and want to avoid white spaces on left and right side if visitor have large screen. To use complete visitor screen, take a look on adaptable SEO Two Columns Fluid (Liquid) Page Layout. Also, you can check other types of page layouts listed in the Navigation area.
